I’m an artist from Madrid, Spain. For the last six years I’ve been working under
sponsorship from Andrew Weissman, a collector from Washington DC. He
discovered me while I was having a solo show at Weinstein Gallery in San
Francisco. While under sponsorship, I’ve been living in Sausalito and Santa
Monica. Prior to moving west, I spent three years in New York. I originally came
to the United States by receiving a grant to attend Cooper Union in New York.
My works are mostly life-sized figures. They range from 10”x10” to 103”x61”. I
work on paper that is laid over canvas, and mounted on wooden frames. I use
acrylic, graphite, inks, and resins to create my images. I would define my work
as Abstract – Realism, with a Conceptual emphasis.
I focus on humanism, inspired by the Renaissance, where the principal
attention was on the figure. I like to work on life size paintings or larger. Usually
I choose nakedness to avoid any social reference, dealing with existential
issues that can be related to anyone.
The purpose of representing people is a way to magnify their existence and
their values. I treat these images as sacred forms, almost as Icons. I try to
avoid any social element to make a more universal statement. These are
confrontational pieces that face the viewer with the experience of the inner self.
The work describes the constant battle of the senses, the tension inside. The
duality that exists in our physical condition: spirit and material, perishable and
eternal. Sometimes I draw a line over the person on the paper to reproduce an
almost exact image. The individual and the sense of individuality, appears and
then disappears with the current loss of identity. The head remains open,
without a limit line. In this way, I integrate in the image the abstract nature of the
mind.
Time is always present. The image is situated in a timeless space, though you
can feel the constant motion of time trough it. With every moment comes death
and renewal. I think of infinities and limits.
I go from working in a very minimal way to a more detailed and complex. I use
very few elements to create my work. Always trying to avoid excess by
constructing and washing out the image.
